Dr Fernando completed her medical studies at the prestigious Medical Faculty at University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2008. Then she gained valuable clinical experience by working in several large and specialized tertiary hospitals in Sri Lanka. She also completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Critical Care in Sri Lanka.
She has worked in hospitals throughout Singapore, including Singapore General Hospital, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Ng Teng Fong Hospital. During this time, she gained experience across cardiology, paediatrics, ICU medicine and general medicine.
Dr Fernando moved to Australia with her husband, Dr Chameera Akurugoda, in 2016 and worked in the emergency department at Campbelltown Hospital, Sydney. She joined the Barham Medical Centre in May 2019 (Under Ochre Health). She was a star registrar under the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS). In 2022 she completed her training under the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and she is now a Fellow of RACGP.
Dr Fernando particularly enjoys the rural vibe of Barham and its wonderful, friendly and supportive community. Living with her husband Dr Akurugoda and their son Yehen at their residence by the Murray River, she feels she belongs to this serene environment and town. She enjoys cake decorating and dancing during for leisure and plays Badminton in Kerang during the Winter months.
