Dr Akurugoda completed his medical studies at the prestigious Medical Faculty at University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2008. Then he gained valuable clinical experience by working in several large and specialized tertiary hospitals both in the public and private hospital systems in Sri Lanka. Before moving to Australia, he worked in Singapore to gain valuable experience in International Health.
He fell in love with Rural health whilst working over three years in the rural community at Ampara, a town in the East of Sri Lankan. He had the ability to positively impact the quality of life of that rural population, which formed his passion to become a Rural GP.
Arriving in Australia in 2016, Dr Akurugoda worked in the emergency, intensive care and paediatric departments at Campbelltown Hospital, Camden Hospital and Bowral Hospital in New South Wales’ Southern Highlands. He began practicing at Barham in May 2019 (Under Ochre Health). He was a shining registrar under the Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS). In 2023 he was awarded the Ochre’s Rural Doctor of the Year for NSW. He completed his training under Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) in 2023 and he is now a Fellow of ACRRM.
Dr Akurugoda enjoys family time with Anusha and their son Yehen, at their own residence in Barham right next to the majestic Murray River. He loves playing cricket with Barham Koondrook Cricket Club. This is his 6th year for the club. He has won awards both as a Batsman and a Bowler in many seasons. He has Captained the team as well. He also enjoys playing Badminton in Kerang during the Winter months.
